Metamorphosis of Memories, 2022

Mixed Media, chiffon fabric, rope, projector.

I have worked with memory and memories as a theme. I have dedicated this work to my grandfather, who had Alzheimer’s and forgot us each day more than yesterday. I wrote a poem about our memories in English and Farsi and included the only three dialogues I had with him in it. As the viewers moved forward, the poem would disappear through different layers of fabrics overlapping.

Interwoven, 2021

Mixed media, Yarn.

I have surrounded myself with knots in this performance to represent moments in life that we have created or caused by ourselves. This performance is the result of 8 spontaneous hours that I have edited into 5 minutes and used overlapping strategies to emphasize on passage of time. This performance is influenced by Maria Chavez’s interview, where she said “Sometimes we need to take a step back and allow things to go out of control, and not see it as something you need to fix, but something you just experience.” Accordingly, I wanted to experience and tended to open these knots patiently throughout the performance. Therefore, by the end of the performance, I have decided to embrace the yarn knots and accept them the way they are.

Me, Myself and I, 2021

Mixed media.

Me, Myself and I is a self-portrait of me trying to identify in front of the mirror. The mirror in this performance is a metaphor for an entry into my soul. The image of self is constantly changing and overlapping throughout the performance which represents different stages of me. Overall, this performance was the outcome of me trying to define myself for about thirty minutes sitting in front of the mirror and being spontaneous.

Dreams of A Dream, 2021

Mixed media, projection, blanket.

This video performance was based on Bed. We often come to this world and leave the world when we are in the bed, sleep, etcetera. The performance is capturing the trauma of sexual abuse and its burden on my shoulders so I captured it as a dream and disappeared at the end. The disappearance was my way of forgetting and letting go of that trauma.

Self Freeing, 2021

Mixed media, white fabric, plaster, yarn.

In the soul of each of us, there is always a way to reach perfection, and it is nothing but passing and liberation from self …

Reflection of Interactions, 2020

Mixed media, playdough, box.

This face was inside a box with mirrors all around it. Because everytime we encounter a person in our life, the first thing we look for is our resemblance. Why!? Because I think we are looking for ourselves.
This performance installation is filmed from the space inside of the box (inside us). Each person stands in front of the mirror box and stares at themselves the whole time, and several hands reach inside the box. They try to affect the person they are interacting with without even knowing how positive or negative the effect was. Then the next person puts his hand inside the box, and they'll do the same.
It has always been interesting for me how we enter into other people's lives easier, and leave just as easily. Without realizing the impact, we have on that person.
In short, I tried to capture part of that effectiveness.
